Short case story of Shahina Akhter & Taslima Akhter
Shahina Akhter | (30 years, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar)

Coming to Uttaran’s technical training center was always scary for me, as my husband never wanted me to learn to work and become self-employed. He used to threaten me that he will leave me if I learn to work.  Whenever I talked about becoming self dependent he used to physically abuse me. However, overcoming all obstacles, I completed 3 months of sewing training, even a 2 months apprenticeship. My husband left me a few days ago. But that does not bother me anymore. Now my only dream is to buy a sewing machine that will play an important role in the survival of me and my children. I will make my dream come true at any cost. Thanks to UNDP and Uttaran for their cooperation in making my dream a reality.

Taslima Akhter | (24 years, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar)

My only dream is to be able to support myself and my family by doing this work. Recently I completed 3 months of sewing training and 2 months of apprenticeship. Now my self-confidence has increased and I am even getting orders for several jobs. Now a machine is very much needed. In that case my profit is getting less, so my goal now is to buy a machine. I am really grateful to UNDP and Uttaran. Our home is in such a remote area that it is unimaginable that anyone would extend a helping hand.
