17. From work to school: education, training, and protection for children in hazardous child labor in the coastal areas of Bangladesh

General Objective: To contribute to the reduction of hazardous child labour in Bangladesh. Specific Objective: To protect children from hazardous child labour in the fish farming and processing sectors in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Children in the area work in river fishing, Sundarbans honey, crabs and fish collection, fish hatcheries, fish depots and crab depots. They work at the crab depot for only 30 taka per hour. The government providing stipends, biscuits and school uniforms in schools but children are not going to school due to poverty. In addition to poverty, there are reasons for parents’ unawareness and indifference in associating children with labor.Due to Covid-19, child marriage, child trafficking and child labor have increased a lot. School age children who are involved in labor without going to school are being harmed physically and mentally. According to government policy, children under the age of 14 cannot be involved in any form of labor and children under the age of 14-17 can be involved in light labor.However, children aged 8-17 in the area are being involved in hazardous work. In keeping with this policy of the government, Uttaran has started this project with the objective of preventing children from doing hazardous work in this area.

Participants number and type: Total student- 350, among them 170 were boys and 180 were girls. All students are hazardous child labour. Their age is between 08-17.
